Councillors have formally approved the purchase of 18 new minibuses, primarily used to provide transport for school pupils with additional support needs. North Lanarkshire Council’s environment and climate change committee acknowledged the purchase of the 32-seat vehicles from Woodall-Nicholson Limited, which trades as Mellor Bus Limited, at a cost of £2.6 million. Replacing smaller, nine-year old buses, the primary function of these vehicles is to provide school transport for almost 600 ASN pupils, as well as covering some mainstream school routes - currently six in total. This contract award followed a “mini competition” procurement procedure, with the successful bid assessed as the most economically advantageous tender, coming in under the council’s estimated cost. The new vehicles will also make the fleet more efficient, due to better fuel use and having a reduced need for maintenance compared to their predecessors the current fleet, as noted in the determination that this bid would achieve the best value for the council. *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire.
