When you are feeling unwell, your first instinct might be to book a GP appointment, but you may want to try something else first. The NHS has reminded people that pharmacies offer quicker and more convenient solutions if you are poorly . It stressed that pharmacists can provide treatment and, in some cases, certain prescription medication without the need to see a GP. The NHS highlighted seven specific conditions and noted that those needing the contraceptive pill can also receive support through their pharmacy. In its fresh warning posted to X, it wrote: "Your pharmacist can provide treatment or some prescription medicine, if needed, for seven common conditions - without you seeing a GP. Think pharmacy first and get seen by your local community pharmacy team. #AskYourPharmacist ." Pharmacists can suggest non-prescription treatments for a range of common health issues, and many can now give certain prescription medicines for specific conditions. This is called Pharmacy First. Conditions they can offer prescription medicine for are: When you visit a pharmacy with one of these conditions, the pharmacist will assess your symptoms, offer guidance, provide treatment, or refer you to a GP or another healthcare specialist if needed. If they are unable to help you, they can refer you to a GP or another healthcare professional, according to the NHS . Do not worry if you’re outside these age ranges as it is confirmed that pharmacists can still give expert advice and help you select over-the-counter treatments. If you need to get the contraceptive pill, you can do this without a prescription. The NHS noted: "Some pharmacies may offer the contraceptive pill for free without a prescription.
