On Thursday, Al Michaels was back in the broadcast booth to deliver play-by-play of a non-conference tilt between the Los Angeles Chargers and Minnesota Vikings. During the contest, he made a comment regarding Vikings kicker Will Reichard, who has only missed one field goal this season — a contentious one at that. In a 21-17 win over the Cleveland Browns, Reichard petitioned the NFL to remove his missed field goal from the contest in London after he believed it struck a camera cable, causing the ball to take an unnatural turn to the right. According to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, the league admitted it was a missed call, but wouldn’t issue a statistical correction. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell addressed the miss, suggesting he doesn’t believe Reichard would naturally miss a field goal by that much. But yeah, not really sure what to say on that one other than that was unfortunate if it did happen, and if it didn’t, so be it.” Fast forward to Thursday night’s game and the situation was back in the headlines after Michaels referenced Reichard’s only miss coming after hitting a wire. The NFL was clearly watching the broadcast and took Michaels’ “lunch away” by making him issue a correction on the miss. “A 32-yard field goal attempt…the league wants to take my lunch away because I said before that Reichard’s only miss was hitting a wire in London. The league said, ‘no, no it was an optical illusion.’ Not what Reichard thinks. Anyway, there you have it, we cleaned it up. Always cleaning up our mess, my mess,” Michaels said of the incident. Los Angeles went on to win the contest in a 37-10 blowout as Reichard made 1 of 2 field goal attempts to bring him to 14 of 16 this season. In his two-year career, Reichard has made 38 of 46 field-goal attempts and he’s a perfect 51-for-51 on extra-point attempts.
