NFL commissioner defends decision to have Bad Bunny headline Super Bowl halftime show

The NFL is sticking with Bad Bunny as its Super Bowl LX halftime show performer. “He’s one of the leading and most popular entertainers in the world,” commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters on Wednesday at the annual fall owners meeting, per The Associated Press. “That’s what we try to achieve. It’s an important stage for us. It’s an important element to the entertainment value. It’s carefully thought through.” The Puerto Rican artist was announced as the show’s halftime musical act in September. Bad Bunny has been an open critic of President Donald Trump and his policies. Trump said in an interview with Newsmax that he has never heard of Bad Bunny and the decision for him to perform at the Super Bowl was “absolutely ridiculous.” Bad Bunny, who sings in Spanish, revealed he skipped the United States on his recent 31-date residency in Puerto Rico because he didn’t want US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to potentially raid the venues he was at. Chief adviser to Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Corey Lewandowski, appeared on “The Benny Show” recently and was asked if ICE would be at the Super Bowl. “There is nowhere that you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally. Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else,” Lewandowski said. “We will find you. We will apprehend you. We will put you in a detention facility, and we will deport you. So know that that is a very real situation under this administration, which is completely contrary to how it used to be.” The Athletic reached out to DHS about whether ICE would be at the Super Bowl in the parking lots or inside Levi’s Stadium, but did not receive a response. Bad Bunny addressed the controversy surrounding the decision to be the Super Bowl halftime performer on “Saturday Night Live” when he spoke Spanish during parts of his monologue. “If you didn’t understand what I just said, you have four months to learn,” the 31-year-old said. Bad Bunny is Spotify’s most streamed Latin artist worldwide.
