New illnesses linked to deadly nationwide pasta listeria outbreak

More illnesses and deaths linked to a deadly listeria outbreak were reported in October, with ready-to-eat pasta meals recalled across multiple groceries stores as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to investigate. The listeria outbreak, linked to certain pasta salads and ready-made meals that contained pre-cooked pasta, began earlier this year. Since the latest CDC update in September, seven more people have been sickened across Washington; Oregon; California; Texas; Nevada; Utah; Minnesota; Missouri; Illinois; Louisiana; Indiana; Michigan; Ohio; Virginia; North Carolina; South Carolina and Florida, bringing the total number of people sickened to 27. Of those, 25 people were hospitalized. Overall, eight deaths have been recorded, including 2 newly reported deaths in Hawaii and Oregon. Deaths from the outbreak had previously been reported in Illinois, Michigan, Texas and Utah, the CDC said. The CDC added that one pregnancy-associated illness resulted in a fetal loss. Sold at Walmart, among other places Home Chef Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo 12.5-oz – best-by date of June 19, 2025, or prior (FreshRealm recall) A previous release from the FDA about the outbreak investigation said the recall was linked to Nate's Fine Foods, Inc., FreshRealm and others. Local Listeria infections can cause serious illness, particularly in older adults, people with weakened immune systems and those who are pregnant or their newborns. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. According to the CDC, anyone who may have purchased the products are advised to not eat the foods and to clean refrigerators, containers and surfaces that may have touched the impacted products. "Listeria can survive in the refrigerator and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces, the CDC said. Which items are impacted? Photos of some of the recalled items can be found below.
