In a significant move, the Telangana government has announced an 85% reservation in management quota seats for local students in postgraduate medical courses at private medical colleges. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy made this announcement following a request from Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha, aiming to enhance opportunities for local graduates in the competitive medical field. This decision translates to approximately 318 postgraduate medical and 70 dental seats being reserved for students from Telangana. Previously, all management quota seats were allocated under the All India Quota (AIQ), which often favoured candidates from other states. Health Minister Narsimha stated, "This change will significantly benefit thousands of MBBS graduates in Telangana, as PG seats are limited and competition is fierce." Government Order Implementation The Chief Minister has instructed the health secretary to issue a Government Order (GO) to formalise this reservation. This directive aims to ensure that local students have equitable access to postgraduate medical education, which is crucial for increasing the number of specialist doctors in the state. Narsimha highlighted that the government is committed to improving medical services for the local population by expanding the pool of qualified medical professionals. The health minister noted that the previous lack of a reservation system for local students in management quota seats allowed students from other states to dominate the available positions. By prioritising Telangana residents, the government aims to create a more level playing field for local graduates. "The number of specialist doctors in the state will increase, thereby providing better medical services to the public," Narsimha added in a post on social media. The introduction of this reservation policy is seen as a proactive step towards addressing the needs of the healthcare sector in Telangana. With the increased availability of postgraduate seats for local students, the state government is optimistic about enhancing the quality of medical education and healthcare delivery. This initiative not only supports local talent but also aligns with the government's broader vision of improving public health outcomes in the region.
