Justice Surya Kant is currently the most senior judge after CJI Gavai. Born into a middle-class family in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant is poised to become the next CJI. Next CJI: The current Chief Justice of India (CJI), Justice Suryakant, is retiring from his post on November 23rd. The central government has initiated the process to select the next CJI. According to the rules, the position is held by the most senior judge after the Chief Justice in the Supreme Court and High Courts. The current CJI makes the recommendation. Now, CJI BR Gavai has announced that the next CJI will be Justice Suryakant, the most senior judge after him in the Supreme Court. On Monday, CJI B.R. Gavai is scheduled to recommend Justice Surya Kant’s name to the central government as the next CJI. Speaking to The Times of India, CJI Gavai, who is currently on a visit to Bhutan, said that his office has received a communication from the central government seeking a recommendation for the next CJI. He said, “I will arrive in Delhi on Sunday evening and will recommend Justice Surya Kant’s name as my successor on Monday.” Justice Surya Kant is currently the most senior judge after CJI Gavai. Born into a middle-class family in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant spent his entire childhood in a joint family. His father was a teacher. He completed his education until matriculation in the village government and high schools. Prior to his elevation to judge, Kant was a senior lawyer and served as the Advocate General of Haryana. He is also the Visitor of the National University of Legal Studies and Research in Ranchi. He is also the ex-officio Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981 and a law degree from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984. He has also served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. Justice Surya Kant is scheduled to become the next CJI on November 24, 2025.
