Nerja launches bold anti-pornography campaign targeting young people

On Monday, October 27, Nerja’s Equality Council unveiled its new awareness campaign, “Porn Isn’t Cool”, aiming to tackle the growing problem of young people accessing pornography on their phones at ever-earlier ages. The initiative, rolled out in collaboration with Chaparil and Sierra Almijara secondary schools and the Adult Education Centre, is designed to educate and protect children and teenagers from violent content that can harm their understanding of relationships, consent, and respect. Why does this campaign matter? “Porn isn’t just inappropriate. It can normalise sexual violence and inequality,” explained Daniel Rivas, Nerja’s councillor for equality. The campaign specifically targets the ways in which online pornography can shape harmful attitudes toward women and girls, potentially leading to abuse and disrespect. The goal is to prevent the early normalization of these harmful behaviours through education, discussion, and community involvement. Education at the heart Throughout the 2025/2026 school year, the campaign will run workshops, talks, and discussions not only for primary and secondary students but also for teachers and families. By engaging the entire school community, Nerja hopes to foster a culture of awareness and responsibility around digital content consumption. The programme includes interactive sessions that teach young people how to navigate online media safely, identify harmful content, and understand the importance of consent, respect, and gender equality. By involving adults as well as students, the initiative seeks to create a supportive environment for discussing sensitive topics without judgement or embarrassment. Community-wide commitment The campaign is backed by the local council, schools, and adult education programmes, reflecting a broad commitment to social responsibility. “We want to equip our young people with the tools to make informed, safe, and respectful choices online,” Rivas added. For Nerja, “Porn Isn’t Cool” is a proactive, long-term push to reshape digital habits and protect future generations, ensuring that education, dialogue, and awareness become as routine as homework.
