When Napster made its debut in 1999, it upended the music industry. Napster, for those unfamiliar, was one of the first P2P fire sharing applications around, and of course, many abused it to share music with others. The company faced a litany of legal challenges, which eventually led to its shutdown in 2001. However, the company was later revived with a different business model, and it has since launched a new product called Napster 26 along with a new hardware product, Napster View. According to the company, Napster 26 is a new platform designed for Mac that allows users to interact with AI using its Napster View glasses-free holographic display. The company says that despite the advancements we’re seeing in AI, users are still relegated to typing their prompts in textboxes and waiting for a response. With Napster 26, it wants to bring AI to “life” with holographic companions. This is thanks to the combination of the platform along with the Napster View display. The display is capable of projecting AI companions as holographic characters. These companions are capable of seeing what’s on your screen, understand context, and provide real-time guidance. Users can then interact with these models using natural language. So, it’s kind of like having a virtual companion that you can talk to, instead of chatting with AI models online. In fact, users can go one step further by creating a “Hyperreal Digital Twin.” This is an AI-powered version of the user whose personality and character will be based on their LinkedIn profile. However, if you’d rather not create an AI clone of yourself, don’t worry. Napster 26 will give users access to over 15,000 specialized AI companions to choose from. We’re cautiously optimistic We have to admit that Napster 26 and the glasses-free holographic display are intriguing. However, will it take off? We’ve already seen various AI-first gadgets and platforms from other companies, like the Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin. Unfortunately, neither of these devices really took off. We’re also hearing rumors that OpenAI and former Apple design legend, Jony Ive, are also working on an AI-first device. Will Napster be able to succeed where others have failed? Only time will tell.
