What makes the Noritake crockery so special and expensive? The teacups have detailed gold work and are priced at more than Rs 3 lakh for each of the cups making a beautiful tea set worth over Rs 15000000 crore. Why are the items valued at such a high price? Nita Ambani lives in one of the expensive residences in the world Antilia. Nita’s estimated net worth is between $2.8 billion and $3 billion and most of this wealth comes from her sizable stake in Reliance Industries Ltd. When it came to buying kitchenware for her fancy residence Nita chose to fly to Sri Lanka as it would save her money. Reports indicate that Nita Ambani flew to Sri Lanka on her private jet and purchased 25000 kitchenware pieces from Noritake. Nita Ambani’s impeccable taste is evident in her shopping list which reportedly includes 25000 pieces for her luxurious high-rise home. The brand she chose is Noritake a 106-year-old Japanese brand known worldwide for its porcelain crockery accented with 22-carat gold or platinum. According to a report by The Economic Times (2010) the large order was not made from Noritakes exclusive showroom in Mumbais Kemps Corner which is not far away from the Ambanis home. Instead Nita Ambani opted to buy in Sri Lanka where Noritake products are 70 -80% less expensive than in any other place in the world including India. This price reduction comes from the fact that Sri Lanka is home to the largest manufacturing facility of the Japanese brand and also an export hub for its fine china to over 100 countries. According to a report in The Economic Times (2010) a 50-piece dinner set with 22-carat gold or platinum trimmings in Sri Lanka costs between $300 and $500 as compared to between $800 and $2000 in India.
