Angry Motherwell skipper Paul McGinn has slammed referee Don Robertson for his 'wild' semi-final howler and claimed it is 'just a nonsense' St Mirren's opening goal was allowed to stand. The Steelmen crashed out after a 4-1 defeat at Hampden on a night they were well below the standard fans expected from their side. But the clash swung in St Mirren's favour when the Buddies took a quick free-kick when the ball was clearly still moving - and that move led to the corner kick which provided Mikael Mandron with the opener. Gutted McGinn said: “They got help for the first goal, which was wild. I didn’t think it was a foul in the first place and then the ball is clearly moving. “Don was waiting for the VAR to help clean it up instead of just doing it himself. Then it went for a corner and he couldn’t clean it up. “It was just a nonsense. Just ref it like you think it is and don’t worry about getting into trouble with whoever’s analysing you. “Before the corner, I went to speak to him about it because it put them through on goal. “Going behind against St Mirren is a disaster because they sit on their box and you can’t get in behind their three at the back. “Listen, these are the breaks in football and you need them if there’s not a big margin between the teams.” Motherwell have started the season well and the brand of football new gaffer Jens Berthel Askou is trying to implement is still a work in progress. But it has taken them to a cup semi-final and lifted them up to sixth in the Premiership, with just two defeats in 10 games. McGinn, whose side travel to Aberdeen on Sunday on league business, added: "The manager’s only four or five months in the door. A few of the boys will realise that the ugly side of the game is a necessity in Scotland if you want to be successful. “They can learn from that, they are pretty young. Everyone knows we were a good bit off it across the board. It’s not as if you have to pick up one individual who has let everyone down. “I’m glad there is another game before the international break and hopefully we can go up to Aberdeen, get back to our best and get a victory.”
