Langley builder hit with second WorkSafe fine this year

A Langley construction firm has been fined almost $12,000, the second fine in a year, for what WorkSafeBC called a high-risk violation. Baydo Development Corporation was fined on Sept. 4 after an inspection of the company’s construction site found two workers doing traffic control while standing in the travel portion of the road, according to a statement from WorkSafe. Baydo also allegedly failed to use temporary traffic control devices, which had been specified in the site’s traffic control plan. “The firm also failed to ensure that TCPs [traffic control persons] had completed a WorkSafeBC-approved traffic control training program, and to ensure a qualified supervisor was designated whenever traffic control was required,” WorkSafe’s statement said. “These were both repeated violations.” Baydo was fined $11,996.28 for this incident. On Nov. 7, 2024, Baydo was fined after WorkSafe inspected a housing construction site where Baydo was the prime contractor, and found a similar incident – a worker allegedly directly traffic from an unsafe position, in the middle of an intersection. The worker was not wearing high-visibility clothing or safety headgear, according to WorkSafe, and there was a lack of training or written procedures for traffic control. WorkSafe noted at the time that these were repeated violations. In that case, the firm was fined $1,707.60. WorkSafe’s statement noted the danger of working around traffic. Between 2015 and 2024 in B.C., nine roadside workers were struck by vehicles and killed, and another 267 were injured. Working in and around traffic is dangerous. “Employers and supervisors are responsible for the safety of employees who are exposed to the hazards of working along roadways and near traffic,” WorkSafe’s statement said. Baydo Development is a Saskatchewan-based company with branch offices in Alberta and British Columbia. The Langley Advance Times has reached out to Baydo for comment.
