Mother and son trapped in camper van

The Dagrenning Search and Rescue Team from Hvolsvöllur and the Air Rescue Team from Hella were called out yesterday to assist a mother and son who became trapped in their camper van in Landmannalaugar due to impassable conditions. The pair had driven into Landmannalaugar on Saturday in bright weather, when the ground was completely clear of snow. But when they woke up Sunday morning, the surroundings had changed dramatically — everything was covered in snow, and they were unable to move. Camper towed to SigaldaPower Station Rescue teams set out for Landmannalaugar in two vehicles to bring the travelers back to inhabited areas. For a while, it seemed they might have to leave the camper behind, but rescuers eventually managed to tow it down to the Sigalda Power Station, where the road conditions were better, according to a statement from the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR). More travelers in trouble On Frostastaðaháls, rescuers came across another traveler who had become stuck in the snow with his jeep and assisted him as well. On their way back down to Hrauneyjar, the teams met a few other tourists driving a small SUV who were planning to head into Landmannalaugar, but were informed that their vehicle would not make it through and decided to turn back. The mother and son in the camper were able to continue their journey from there.
