Mojacar’s big transformation: a town reimagined for the future

Mojacar is in the midst of an important makeover – from the seafront to the sierras – combining public funding, private investment, and sustainable vision to reshape how the town looks, moves and lives. A new era of investment for Mojacar’s progress With €4.5 million from Spain’s Plan de Sostenibilidad Turística en Destinos (Sustainable Tourism Plan for Destinations), Mojacar has become one of Andalucia’s flagship towns for transformation. The funding – part of the EU’s Next Generation initiative – is already visible across the coastline, where crews are redesigning promenades, planting shade trees and installing climate-resilient drainage. Mayor Fran García told the Diario de Almeria that he calls 2025 “a decisive year for Mojacar,” as the town accelerates infrastructure that “improves quality of life while securing a sustainable future.” Coastal, road and rural renewal Two kilometres of Mojacar’s popular seafront are being upgraded under regeneration works worth about €1.1 million, creating greener public spaces and accessible walkways. Inland, the Itínere Rural programme has funded €125,000 in improvements to the Las Pilas agrarian road, while the provincial council adds €700,000 for safer access routes linking Mojacar, Turre and Garrucha. Further ahead, the long-planned “variante” bypass – designed to divert summer traffic – remains on pause amid legal and expropriation delays, a lingering concern for residents and businesses hoping for relief from congestion. Private projects are also powering progress At the same time, Mojacar’s southern edge is stirring with activity. The Macenas Mediterranean Resort is preparing for a landmark Hyatt Destination 5-star hotel, a €40 million project expected to bring over a hundred jobs and extend the season beyond summer months. Nearby, Jarquil has begun Phase 2 of Los Altos de Macenas, adding 88 homes and two pools designed for year-round living. Future-proofing water and growth Behind the scenes, an €8.9 million upgrade of the Almanzora water treatment plant and the new EDAR Playa Macenas wastewater system aim to make Mojacar’s growth water-secure – with treated water reused for irrigation and green areas. Together, these works signal more than urban renewal. They reflect a broader ambition: to make Mojacar not just a seasonal holiday postcard, but a sustainable Mediterranean town balancing tourism, community and environment.
