UFC legend BJ Penn was charged with assault on Tuesday in Hilo, Hawaii, following a physical altercation at a residence, police said. Penn, 46, was arrested without incident at 11:50 a.m., according to a news release from the Hawaii Police Department. His arrest came more than 10 hours after police responded to a report of an assault at a residence around 1 a.m. The victim, a 45-year-old male, reported that Penn “punched and kicked him multiple times” before he was able to leave the area and contact police. He later received medical treatment for his injuries at Hilo Benioff Medical Center, police said. Penn was charged with third-degree assault and was released on $1,000 bail, according to the release. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 2 in Hilo District Court. Penn’s arrest on Tuesday comes a little more than five months after he was arrested twice in one week in late May on accusations of abuse of a family or household member. He was arrested May 25 and released on $2,000 bail. The following day, he was arrested again and placed on $1,000 bail, according to online records. After his arrests, Penn’s mother, Lorraine Shin, was granted a restraining order against her son that was to be active for at least 180 days, according to Yahoo Sports. In a statement, Shin accused Penn of “extreme psychological abuse towards me for over the past several months that I am not Lorraine Shin, I killed his family and have taken over his mother’s identity, and he wants me to be removed from his home,” MMA Weekly reports.
