Minecraft Down: Users Report Massive Outage Worldwide

On Wednesday, the popular game Minecraft experienced a notable service disruption. According to Downdetector, a website that monitors online service status, more than 6000 user reports were filed concerning the issue. The vast majority of the complaints (61%) were related to server connections. Smaller percentages of users reported problems with login difficulties(33%) and general gameplay (6%). This outage occurred at the same time that users of Microsoft Azure reported disruptions, specifically with the Azure Portal and services located in the East US region, suggesting a possible connection between the two incidents. Microsoft, Minecraft's parent company, has acknowledged the outage and confirmed it is actively working on a solution. In an official statement, the company identified the source of the problem as an issue with its Azure Front Door (AFD) service, which began around 16:00 UTC. This disruption led to a loss of availability for some services and specifically impacted users' ability to access the Azure Portal. As a temporary workaround, Microsoft suggested that customers attempting to access or use resources could try programmatic methods, such as PowerShell or CLI, if they were unable to use the portal directly. To help mitigate the portal access problem, the company has already rerouted the portal away from the affected Azure Front Door infrastructure and is continuing to evaluate the situation. Microsoft added that it is actively assessing failover options for its internal services that depend on AFD and is continuing to investigate the root cause. The company stated that more information would be provided within 60 minutes.
