Michigan sandwich chain is adding glass-enclosed sports bar with a great rink view

PITTSFIELD TWP., MI — A long-planned sports bar near Ann Arbor is opening in the next few weeks. CD Top Shelf, part of the Southeast Michigan-based sandwich chain Chop Detroit, will unveil its new location at Biggby Coffee Ice Cube, 2121 Oak Valley Drive, “in the next 30 to 60 days,” according to Matthew Kavanaugh, co-owner of Chop Detroit. The bar will be the chain’s third spot after iterations in Chelsea and Brighton and will be in a glass room overlooking the stadium arena. Kavanaugh, 44, described the forthcoming bar as “modern” and “laid back.” It will offer pizza, chicken tenders and other fried foods. “It offers another amenity to folks who are in the rink, I think that having the ability to sit down in a restaurant and actually watch a sport that you love and that you’re a part of is something that’s inherent to the hockey and figure skating communities,” Kavanaugh, a Romeo resident, said. “They had this space in the arena, so we thought, ‘Why not capitalize on it?’” The bar is awaiting a certificate of occupancy and an official liquor license before it can begin serving customers. Kavanaugh said the bar menu is a “good contrast to the healthy menu” at Chop Detroit, which specializes in chopped salad sandwiches. He is looking to hire new staff to help out at the bar and restaurant. Chop Detroit has recently experienced “significant staffing shortages, theft, and no shows,” according to a Nov. 2 Facebook post. Despite these challenges, Kavanaugh said he is confident his business will remain open. He previously said “the five-year plan” is to expand to Ohio and Indiana and to franchise at some point. Related: Hockey family elevates Ann Arbor ice arena’s food options
