Miami's Mario Cristobal Under Fire After Upset Loss to SMU

Following a 2024 season where Miami flirted with the College Football Playoff race in quarterback Cam Ward’s final season with the program, the Hurricanes made serious investments for the team in 2025. With an NIL valuation of $4.3 million, Beck is the second-highest paid college football player behind Texas quarterback Arch Manning ($6.8 million). The Hurricanes’ campaign looked promising with a 27-24 win over then-No. 6 Notre Dame in Week 1. Miami climbed up the rankings to No. 2 before being upset 24-21 by Louisville on Oct. 17. However, Miami ran into trouble on Saturday when they played on the road against SMU. On Friday night, the Mustangs announced a two-year contract extension for head coach Rhett Lashlee, and his players came out motivated to play the Hurricanes. Miami outgained SMU in total yards (433-388), but lost the turnover battle 2-1. The Mustangs’ defense intercepted Beck in the first period of overtime. SMU’s offense scored a touchdown six plays later to earn a 26-20 win over the Hurricanes in front of 35,074 fans at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Miami fans on social media were frustrated by Saturday’s outcome. After a promising start to the season, the Hurricanes’ chances of making the CFP have cratered after losing their second contest in three outings. Not long after the loss, Cristobal’s name was trending on X. “Mario Cristobal is a disgrace to Miami sports,” wrote a fan. Dude is a terrible Head Coach,” argued a fan. “I’m pretty sure Miami was -3500 to make the College Football Playoff a few weeks ago. Never underestimate the power of Mario Cristobal,” posted another. “Man, Mario Cristobal really does “less with more” than just about any coach in the country,” suggested a poster. “Mario Cristobal is 4-11 in November since he’s been the coach of the Canes unacceptable,” wrote another. “What more does Mario Cristobal need? He has the support through NIL, the recruiting is allegedly better than the rest of the conference teams – and you still can’t win. He needs to go…” argued a fan. Cristobal is now 28-18 overall and 14-14 in ACC play in his fourth season at Miami. The Hurricanes will next host Syracuse in Week 11. For more on the NCAA, head to Newsweek Sports.
