Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has petitioned the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), describing its ruling on degrees awarded by the Swiss Management Centre University (Switzerland) as an “illegal derecognition.” The petition, filed on behalf of the Alumni Association (Ghana Chapter), calls on the Commission to set aside its directive and allow a full review by the Board on the validity of the degrees. ‘Kissi Agyebeng is not the conscience of the nation’ – Kpebu backs Gyampo It is also seeking that GTEC issue a formal clarification to correct public perception regarding the university’s degrees. “Set aside the directive issued by the Director-General declaring SMC University degrees derecognised, pending full review by the Board, reaffirm the validity of degrees obtained under NAB accreditation up to 2018, in accordance with principles of fairness, equity, good conscience and statutory continuity. “Issue an official clarification to all employers, professional bodies, and the general public to correct the perception misrepresentation and misperceptions regarding the status of SMC University awards obtained during the valid accreditation period,” the petition read. According to the institution, GTEC’s directive has caused them significant damage, stressing that the derecognition of SMC degrees could create a public perception of the institution as fraudulent. “Reputational damage could result from the perception that our clients’ degrees are fraudulent or derecognised, severe psychological distress and erosion of trust in Ghana’s higher-education regulatory framework,” it added. Kpebu acknowledged GTEC’s role in maintaining standards in higher education but urged the Board to act swiftly to restore confidence in Ghana’s regulatory system and protect innocent graduates. You must pay dearly for sitting down and allowing Ofori-Atta to ‘flee’ – Kpebu slams OSP “We appeal for the urgent intervention of the Governing Board to restore confidence in the regulatory system, protect innocent graduates, and avert possible litigation and public mistrust in GTEC,” the petition concluded.
