The 31-year-old man accused of seriously wounding former Fall River Mayor Will Flanagan in a stabbing is now facing felony charges in connection with the incident, court records show. Corree Gonzales is charged with armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, causing serious bodily injury in connection with the incident Monday night, Fall River District Court records show. He has yet to be arraigned on those charges. Gonzales appeared in court on Tuesday on four misdemeanor counts of assault and battery on a police officer. Police say Gonzales assaulted officers trying to detain him. A judge ordered a mental health evaluation for him, the results of which were not immediately clear Wednesday. Records show Gonzales has a long criminal history dating back to 2013, with 20 cases filed against him in Fall River District Court. The vast majority of those cases, including charges of assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon and distributing drugs, were either dismissed or disposed of by a plea, records show. The stabbing happened at around 5 p.m. on Hartwell Street in Fall River, according to the city’s police department. Flanagan was found with “significant injuries,” the department said. According to The Herald News, Flanagan had multiple stab injuries to his neck. He was brought to a nearby hospital and was in serious but stable condition on Monday night, police said. Flanagan was mayor of Fall River from 2010 to 2014. He then became the CEO of Cosmopolitan Dispensary at 82 Hartwell St., located near where the stabbing happened.
