Mamdani wins New York City’s Mayoral election

Zohran Mamdani has won New York City’s Mayoral election, ushering in a new era of Democratic politics in America’s most populous and wealthiest city. Thirty-four-year-old Mamdani, who was born in Kampala, Uganda and moved to the United States at the age of seven, will also become the first Muslim mayor of the Big Apple. Running as an outsider, he defeated Independent Candidate and former State Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani’s win capped off a very successful night for Democrats that also secured sweeping victories in key Governors races in both the states of New Jersey and Virginia. Hundreds of Mamdani supporters gathered at his watch party in Brooklyn, cheered as the news filtered through that he’d been projected to win, confirming polling that showed his victory would be overwhelming. The Queens Assemblyman’s campaign placed the affordability crisis in America’s largest city at the centre of his campaign, brushing off efforts that pointed to his lack of experience in government and President Donald Trump labelling the Democratic socialist a communist. Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo, even over his own party’s candidate on the eve of the election, did little to blunt Mamdani’s trajectory, who promised a progressive economic agenda that saw a coalition of voters rally to his side.
