Madrid’s Virgin of Almudena festivities: music, parades and pastries

DURING the beginning of November, the capital city of Spain will be celebrating its blowout patron saint festivities, paying homage to the Virgin of Almudena with music, dancing, folklore, and a traditional crowning ceremony. The main venues for the festivities will be the Almudena Cathedral, the Paseo del Prado, and the Plaza Mayor, and will be the epicentre of celebration in the vibrant capital city of Madrid. Madrid’s cultural spectacle to attract thousands The event will last from Thursday, November 6 to Sunday, November 9 and will include a variety of activities, performances, spectacles, and merrymaking. A traditional and religious event, Madrid’s patron saint festivities are a yearly spectacle that combines cultural history with a modern flair to attract visitors. A programme chock-full of talented performers The Madrid City Council, along with its Department of Tourism and Sports, will develop a special programme of free activities including processions, parades, concerts, and other, more traditional activities. Contemporary music concerts with reduced price tickets will also be offered and fill the streets of Madrid with music. Among the performers are the Madrid Municipal Symphonic Band, performing Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s celebrated symphonic work Scheherazade. The weekend will also see a special group of performances at the venues of the Madrid en Vivo network, consisting of 22 concerts featuring female artists, a project called “Patronas 2025,” also with reduced-price tickets. It is the second edition of the project and aims to put Madrid’s excellent female performers in the spotlight, as well as bring live music closer to the public. On Sunday, a mass procession and parade will take place, complete with bagpipes and dulzainas, a type of wind instrument, a tasting of the traditional crown, performances, and recitals. More than a dozen groups, with nearly 200 performers, will participate in this event, demonstrating the richness and relevance of popular cultural events. Not only this, at 12:30pm on Sunday in the Plaza Mayor, the Almudena crown will be prepared and distributed by the Association of Chefs and Pastry Chefs of the Community of Madrid (ACYRE Madrid). The crown, a sweet delicacy created in 1978 in order to honour the Virgin of Almudena and make her the patron saint of ACYRE, has become a major symbol of the festival. More than 1,000 servings of this delicious pastry will be handed out to the public.
