CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Charleston-area restaurants dominated the list of South Carolina eateries recognized in the first edition of the Michelin Guide American South. The guide made its official debut in Greenville on Monday night. South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism Director Duane Parrish said the guide celebrates “the heart and soul of our state, our chefs, restaurateurs, farmers, and hospitality professionals whose creativity and dedication define not just the flavor, but the culture of the South.” The Michelin Guide awards stars to restaurants considered to offer high-quality cooking. Three of the four recognized with one Michelin Star are in Charleston: Malagón Mercado y Taperia – Charleston | Spanish Cuisine Scoundrel – Greenville | French Cuisine Vern’s – Charleston | Contemporary American Cuisine Wild Common – Charleston | Contemporary American Cuisine The guide also has a Bib Gourmand recognition for restaurants that serve outstanding food at a great value. All three of the Bib Gourmand-recognized restaurants are in Charleston: Leon’s Oyster Shop – Charleston Lewis Barbecue – Charleston Rodney Scott’s BBQ – Charleston The Post House Inn in Mount Pleasant was named a Michelin Key Hotel, a designation that recognizes “exceptional hospitality and accommodations.” “The Michelin Guide’s arrival is more than an accolade; it’s a recognition of the stories, people, and passion that make Southern cuisine extraordinary,” Parrish said. The guide also listed 16 restaurants as “recommended” in South Carolina. Nine of the 16, praised for their "creativity, consistency, and contribution to the region’s vibrant culinary landscape," are in the Lowcountry: Chubby Fish – Charleston Di Vino Rosso – Columbia FIG – Charleston Husk – Charleston Jianna – Greenville Lowland – Charleston Motor Supply Company – Columbia O.A.K. Prime Kitchen and Bar – Myrtle Beach Soby’s – Greenville Sorelle – Charleston The Anchorage – Greenville The Establishment – Charleston The Obstinate Daughter – Sullivan’s Island The Restaurant at Zero George – Charleston Topsoil Kitchen & Market – Travelers Rest Xiao Bao Biscuit – Charleston The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism’s Discover South Carolina partnered with the Michelin Guide, Travel South USA and Visit Greenville to host the Michelin Guide American South’s official debut.
