Love and Lyrics: When Music and Romance Share the Same Studio

By Jonathan Mbiriyamveka In the dazzling world of Zimbabwean music, where melodies meet ambition and passion fuels creativity, love sometimes finds its way into the studio. As the spotlight turns toward the upcoming Nubian Notes Concert—an all-female celebration of artistry at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on November 8—two of the show’s leading stars, Tamy Moyo and Shashl, have become the center of a different kind of conversation: office romance in the music industry. Both Tamy and Shashl, admired for their powerful voices and distinct styles, have previously been linked to their producers—relationships that blurred the line between professional collaboration and personal connection. For Tamy, it was Chiweddar, the hitmaker behind many of her popular tracks. Shashl, on the other hand, was romantically involved with Chillspot Records’ producer, Levels. While both artists have since moved on, their stories have sparked broader debate about the place of romance in creative workplaces. Is love in the studio a distraction or simply a human reality? Tamy Moyo, ever thoughtful and composed, shared her perspective in a recent interview. “Creatives are still human beings and we also have the right to experience love, motherhood, friendship… Naturally, we tend to interact a lot amongst ourselves,” she said. “When choosing a partner, it has nothing to do with whether or not they are in the office. “The studio can be the office, the stage can be the office—it has absolutely nothing to do with romance. We are human beings at the end of the day and we cannot control who we fall in love with.” Her words reflect a grounded understanding of what it means to live—and love—within a shared creative space. For many musicians, the studio becomes a second home, a place of vulnerability and shared expression. It’s no wonder that emotional bonds often form where songs are written and dreams are born. As the Nubian Notes Concert approaches, featuring other stars like Feli Nandi, Gemma Griffiths, and Nisha Ts, the event promises more than just music. It’s a celebration of women’s strength, independence, and authenticity—both on and off the stage. And perhaps that’s the beauty of it: in an industry where emotions shape art, love—like music—can’t always be separated from the workspace. Because, as Tamy reminds us, “we cannot control who we fall in love with.” Subscribe to Blog via Email
