Lounges for gig workers are set to be inaugurated soon in Coimbatore city. These facilities, which cater to delivery personnel as well as other app-based service providers, have been set up at two key locations: DB Road in R.S. Puram and near the Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand. According to officials, the lounges are designed to provide essential amenities for the convenience of gig workers. They will include seating arrangements, mobile charging points, toilets, and will be fully air-conditioned to ensure comfort. Each lounge can accommodate around 20 persons at a time and is equipped with ramps for wheelchair access along with LED lighting to enhance visibility. Gig workers engaged in food delivery and e-commerce services will be able to utilise the lounges completely free of cost. Officials said the facilities have been developed to ensure the safety and security of all gig workers, with particular attention to women workers. They will also provide a convenient resting space for workers who often spend long hours on the road. Officials added that similar lounges launched in Chennai were constructed using shipping containers. These units are modular in nature, allowing them to be relocated easily if needed, which makes the facilities flexible and suitable for changing requirements in the future. All works at these lounges, including electricity connections and underground drainage, have now been completed, officials confirmed. The lounges are ready for use, and the inauguration is expected to take place within a week.
