You know what they say about sports sometimes … it just means more … and Republican Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry reportedly feels that way. After the LSU Tigers suffered a blowout defeat Saturday against the Texas A&M Aggies, long talks started about the football program’s future, according to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. Eventually, this led to head coach Brian Kelly getting fired. The decision-making from LSU involved Kelly’s buyout structure, which is a reported $53.3 million, per LSU Wire. However, things could undergo a restructuring depending on what happens with negotiations between the two parties. College leadership also makes things difficult for Louisiana State University, as their ex-president William F. Tate IV left for Rutgers earlier in 2025. Matt Lee has been serving on an interim basis since July 1. Jeff Landry got in the mix. Landry was an “integral” piece in the talks before Kelly’s firing, Dellenger said. His full role isn’t completely clear at this time, but the fact that a governor is reported to have gotten involved, and heavily at that, with the firing of a college football coach is “wow” in itself. The situation in Baton Rouge is made complicated as the university is searching for a permanent president (the school announced five finalists). In its absence, Gov. Jeff Landry has become integral and is expected, if he hasn’t already, to meet with key donors & board members. — Ross Dellenger (@RossDellenger) October 26, 2025 College football, baby.
