Liverpool given taste of their own pill as ex-Arsenal player Nketiah hands Gunners lifeline in early title race

Liverpool suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season following Crystal Palace’s late effort. The Reds came into the game unbeaten in all competitions and have been saved severally times by late goals. However, they were beaten by a late goal, which has often favoured them, with Palace defeating the Reds 2-1 at Selhurst Park. As it happened Oliver Glasner made one change to his Crystal Palace side that beat West Ham 2-1 last weekend, with Adam Wharton returning in midfield in place of Will Hughes, who drops to the bench. Arne Slot, on the other hand, rotated his Liverpool squad in the midweek League Cup win against Southampton. Alexander Isak is handed a first Premier League start for his new club, with Hugo Ekitike suspended after his sending off midweek. Just nine minutes into the game, Palace took an early lead from a corner. Ryan Gravenberch headed the Palace corner into his own six-yard box while tussling with Marc Guehi and Ismaila Sarr smashed in. The host created several chances to increase their lead, but could not get the second goal in the first half. In the second half, the visitors pushed for an equaliser but found it difficult to break down the Crystal Palace backline. However, in the 87th minute, the Reds swung a cross into the box, with Chris Richards' attempted clearance falling to Chiesa and he volleyed home. The Reds thought they had secured a draw in the game, but a last-minute goal from Eddie Nketiah gave Crystal Palace the win.
