Lions release Super Bowl-winning cornerback from practice squad

The Detroit Lions have cleared a spot on their practice squad after announcing the release of veteran cornerback Kendall Fuller on Monday after signing him just two weeks ago. The 30-year-old former Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs did not play for the Lions and last played in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins toward the end of the 2024 season. Fuller spent his first two seasons in Washington after being selected in the third round of the 2016 draft out of Virginia Tech before being traded to the Chiefs in 2018 as part of the deal that sent QB Alex Smith to Washington. He played in 26 games for Kansas City, winning the Super Bowl in 2019 and re-signing with Washington on a four-year deal after the title victory. After the conclusion of his contract, Fuller signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins ahead of last season and made 11 starts for them, however he did miss a handful of games due to suffering multiple concussions in a two-month period, leading to his release in February. Fuller’s signing with the Lions came amid the flurry of injuries to the Detroit secondary that resulted in playing its Week 7 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a mostly make-shift unit that stepped up big. Even so, the release takes a 10-year veteran out of the locker room when secondary health still isn’t much improved. Cornerback Terrion Arnold has a chance to get back for the Lions after their bye week, but D.J. Reed and Avonte Maddox still aren’t ready to make their returns. The group of Amik Robertson, Rock Ya-Sin, Nick Whiteside and Arthur Maulet certainly earned praise and another shot to hold down the secondary when the Lions face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, even if depth gets a little thinner for Detroit.
