The title of a recent editorial, “Isle driver habits must change now,” is the understatement of the year (Star-Advertiser, Our View, Oct. 31). Recently, I crossed Kaonohi Street to get to the bus stop on the other side. I’d been at an event showcasing some of the Department of Health’s life-saving programs. I couldn’t see a crosswalk anywhere. After carefully checking traffic, I got halfway across the street without issue. On the other side, an older pickup was way at the top of the hill. I gently waved to alert the driver and thank them for watching out for me. The driver’s response? They hit the accelerator. Fortunately, I safely made it to the other side. Safe driving and aloha are lacking in our Aloha State. It’s difficult to come to terms with the fact that we have drivers who deliberately speed up to try and scare people with disabilities, with the potential to kill them. Violet E.
