Lane Kiffin Sounds Off On College Football’s Major Head Coach Firings

Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin addressed the happenings across the college football landscape, which has seen several big-time programs part ways with their head coaches. Penn State fired head coach James Franklin after a three-game losing streak; LSU moved on from Brian Kelly; UCLA let go of its coach mid-season; and the Florida Gators did the same. One of the names circling the rumor mill for all of these top jobs is Kiffin, who has rebuilt Mississippi into a powerhouse in the SEC. He has his Rebels ranked seventh in the nation and on the edge of making the College Football Playoff. And NFL coaches, which you see all the time, they get one, two years, you know, and you’d be like, ‘well, in college that doesn’t happen.’ You know, because it’s harder to build a roster and they give you more time,” Kiffin said regarding how college football positions used to be handed. “It’s obviously not the case now. I think it’s a product of things that happen. I think that, you know, Elko doing such a great job at A&M, I think puts in people’s heads, like, ‘hey, these buyouts are ridiculous to pay.’ “But I’m sure in A&M, right now sitting there going, ‘that was ridiculous to pay, but I feel pretty good about that right now.’ So anytime something works, you know, other people go, ‘well, let’s go do that.'” Both Kelly and Franklin had massive buyouts tied to their name, totalling more than $40 million each. These roadblocks did not stop the teams from making the move, and in the future, it has established a new precedent that not even money can protect a job in college.
