Kody Brown Cries About Estrangement From Kids, Mentions Ex-Wives

Kody Brown was forced to face the mistakes he made in his past marriages during his time on Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test. During the Thursday, November 6, episode of the Fox series, Kody, 56, opened up about his personal life after being offered more responsibility as a recruit. “I’d consider myself a great leader,” he shared in a confessional. “And I did the best to lead with my family.” Andrew East subsequently asked Kody about the “pros and cons” of his lifestyle, to which he replied, “I had 18 kids with four wives. There have been three divorces, and I would never do that again — I would never marry again.” For Kody, there was no other option than polygamy. “I grew up in an entire culture that had it as a side note to their belief system,” he noted. “My dad had three wives.” The fallout of Kody’s divorces led to tension between him and his kids. “In some cases with my children, communication has ceased,” Kody added. “When you don’t have a deep connection with your children, that is a disappointment. But there are probably certain things I won’t own. I will own where I should.” Kody has been spiritually married to wife Robyn Brown since 2010. At the time, Kody was already married to Meri Brown, Janelle Brown and Christine Brown. He and Robyn, 47, legally wed in December 2014, and he adopted her three children from a prior marriage. (The couple share two children of their own, Solomon, 13, and Ariella, 9.) Kody’s first three marriages didn’t last, and he is now only still together with Robyn. Christine, 53, announced their split in November 2021, followed by Janelle, 56, who revealed in December 2022 that she and Kody had separated. Meri, 54, confirmed her split from Kody in January 2023. Later in the episode, Kody was called in for a conversation with the Directing Staff, where they asked about his backstory. “[My calling] was to be a husband and a father. I had four wives within the household. [That caused issues] within the family. There’s always the accusation that I was favoring one [child] over another,” he recalled. “They were turning against [me]. They were like, ‘I don’t need Dad or want Dad in my life.'” Kody found himself “offended by a lot of” what his kids did. “They rejected me. I felt like I gave all I had to my kids as long as they were engaging me. They always got reciprocation,” he explained. The DS questioned whether Kody was taking his “proper responsibility in the fallout” with his children. This caused Kody to get choked up before he started to cry about the current state of his family. “I don’t want to admit that I’m wrong sometimes. I don’t like being wrong,” he shared. “There was a point in my life when I was concerned about everybody. I should have had a strong relationship with my children. I am in a place in my life now where I’m very willing to say that I’ve been wrong.” Kody continued: “My failure is I thought I knew about being a dad and husband. I really thought I did and I misunderstood that. I did get it wrong in so many ways and I hated it. I hated being blamed for it — so it made me resistant to ownership.” In a confessional, Kody expressed his hope of repairing “all the relationships” in his life — even with his ex-wives. “That’s not easy. I get that,” he continued. “I am sorry I have hurt or offended my children. And that kind of humility I need back in my life.” Special Forces allowed Kody to put his thoughts into words with a death letter, which read, “Dear Robyn — love of my life — please tell my children that I had wanted more time to tell them I loved them. Had there been time, I would have got it right and fixed it. You were my rock through so much sadness. I’ll see you in your dreams, my sweet queen [and] my eternal love.” Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test airs on Fox Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
