The Kauai Police Department is seeking the public’s help identifying human remains discovered along Aliomanu Beach in April. Police said a DNA profile is now available to compare with missing persons reports or family reference samples. The DNA analysis and forensic laboratory testing took longer than usual to complete due to the advanced state of decomposition of the partial remains, along with prolonged exposure to the ocean environment. So far, police said these analyses confirmed the remains are of a man, who possible had a hernia operation as a surgical mesh “consistent with previous hernia repair” was found with them. The remains were also found with two pairs of long thermal underwear — one labeled Fruit of the Loom and the other Indera — and green corduroy pants, estimated to be approximately 34 inches in waist size and 42 inches in length. Kauai police have reviewed missing persons and welfare check reports, and worked with the Honolulu Police Department, but have yet to identify a match. The investigation remains active. There is, however, no indication of any ongoing public safety concern, police said. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Detective Hamberg at 808-241-1707. Anonymous tips can be reported to Crime Stoppers Kauai at 808-246 8300 or at crimestopperskauai.org or via the P3 Tips app.
