Top-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues has taken up Sunil Gavaskar on his promise for a jam session in light of India’s win in the 2025 Women’s World Cup, with a 52-run win over South Africa in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. In a video posted on her Instagram, Rodrigues said she was ‘ready with my guitar’ and hoped that the former India legend was ‘ready with your mic’. Rodrigues was one of the champions of India’s historic triumph. She put up a Player of the Match performance in the semi-final against defending champions Australia, scoring 127*, the highest-ever for India in a record-breaking chase. On the following day, Gavaskar said that if India were to lift the cup, he’d love to sing along while Rodrigues plays her guitar, just like they did impromptu at a BCCI awards function in 2024. “Hi Sunil Gavaskar, sir,” Jemimah said on Instagram. “I saw your message and you said that if India wins the World Cup, we’ll sing a song together. I am ready with my guitar, hope you are ready with your mic. Lots of love, sir, thank you for everything.” Here’s what Gavaskar said on Sports Today: “If India win the World Cup, she and I, if she’s okay with it, will sing a song together. She’ll have her guitar, and I’ll sing along. We actually did that once at one of the BCCI awards a couple of years back. There was a band playing, and we just decided to join in. She was on the guitar, and I sang with my whatever voice I have. But if India win, I would love to do it again-if she is happy to do that, happy to do that with an old man. I am all for it.” India rode on an 87 from Shafali Verma and a five-wicket haul from Deepti Sharma to beat the Proteas, securing their first-ever triumph at the biggest competition in the world.
