Jakarta Police Tap Ride-Hailing Drivers to Report Crimes with Rp500,000 Rewards

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Metro Police has launched a partnership with online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers to strengthen public safety in the capital. Drivers who record and report criminal activities can receive a reward of Rp500,000 (around US$30) from the city’s police chief.Deputy Chief of the Jakarta Metro Police, Brigadier General Dekananto Eko Purwono, announced the initiative during a gathering with ojol drivers at the Juanda Police Subsector in Central Jakarta on Friday, September 26, 2025.“If there is a crime on the streets, we will give appreciation. In fact, there will be a Rp500,000 reward from the Police Chief if footage of a key incident helps solve the case,” Dekananto said.He emphasized that the incentive is intended as encouragement rather than a permanent scheme. “This is just a form of motivation,” he explained.“I believe that in the future, even without the bonus, our ojol partners will share information because maintaining security is a shared responsibility.”Building the “Kamtibmas Ojol” CommunityThe police have established the “Kamtibmas Ojol Community,” beginning with dozens of drivers around Gambir, Central Jakarta. Members are tasked with reporting suspicious activities and assisting police in keeping Jakarta’s streets safe.According to Dekananto, the partnership is designed to make ojol drivers strategic allies of law enforcement.“The Kamtibmas Ojol is a form of partnership between the police and our driver friends,” he said, adding that registered members will act as “community police” in their neighborhoods. The Jakarta Metro Police also plans to hold a city-wide ceremony for Kamtibmas Ojol members at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta, with Indonesian National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo expected to attend.Beyond crime prevention, Dekananto said the initiative also aims to reduce discrimination faced by ojol drivers. Members of the Kamtibmas Ojol Community will be given uniforms and vests to strengthen their visibility and sense of belonging.“God willing, we will provide official vests, so when drivers go to malls or other places, no one dares to discriminate against them,” he said.Volunteer-Based EffortEdy Hidayat, chair of the Kamtibmas Ojol Presidium, explained that the program grew out of a discussion with Central Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner General Susatyo Purnomo Condro two weeks earlier.Currently, each district in Central Jakarta is represented by two drivers, totaling around 22 members. Edy stressed that the initiative is voluntary.“They are not security guards, but they will patrol as usual. This is not an official organization, but a group of volunteers ready to help maintain safety together,” he said.Editor’s Choice: Police Push to Repatriate Indonesian Woman Trapped in China Human Trafficking CaseClick here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News
