Inter Milan goalkeeper kills pensioner in horror car crash

Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez has been involved in a fatal crash involving a pensioner. The 81-year-old man was on an electric wheelchair when he reportedly suffered a medical episode just before the collision, rendering him unable to avoid the oncoming traffic. Martinez, 27, was on his way to training when the tragedy unfolded on Via Bergamo in Fenegro, near Inter's training complex, Appiano Gentile, on Tuesday morning. The footballer stopped his car and delivered first aid to the elderly pedestrian while emergency services were dispatched. An ambulance and air ambulance attended but the man died at the scene. Martinez did not suffer any injuries. . Italian authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the incident . In response to the tragic news, Inter have postponed manager Cristian Chivu's press conference which was due to take place at 1pm, reports the Mirror . Inter Milan, one of Italy's leading football clubs, is scheduled to play against Fiorentina at San Siro on Wednesday. Martinez, who serves as Inter's second-choice goalkeeper, was on the bench during Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Napoli. Since transferring from fellow Serie A team Genoa in 2024, the Spanish player has made 12 appearances for Inter. Martinez began his career at Las Palmas after spending time at Barcelona's renowned academy, La Masia. The 27 year old made his move to RB Leipzig in 2020 before signing for Genoa two years on. Martinez has had two appearances this season, kicking off with a 2-1 home victory against Sassuolo followed by a 2-0 win away at Cagliari. He also clocked up a full 90 minutes in Inter's recent friendly against Atletico Madrid during the international break, which took place in Libya. Martinez was tipped to be named as a substitute for Wednesday's match, but it remains unclear what steps will be taken by the player, club or authorities. Inter's other reserve goalkeeper, Raffaele Di Gennaro, is out of action for a month following surgery for a scaphoid fracture. After their clash with Fiorentina, Chivu's team - currently sitting fourth in the Serie A table - are set to face Hellas Verona in an away game on Sunday. Inter then play host to Kazakhstani rivals Kairat Almaty in the Champions League next Wednesday before welcoming Lazio in their final match ahead of the November internationals.
