Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez was involved in a fatal road accident. Martinez, 27, was travelling to training on Tuesday morning when he struck a man in a wheelchair at 9:30am, according to reports in Italy. The incident occurred in the village of Fenegro, located in the province of Como, near to Inter's training ground in Appiano Gentile. The victim, an 81-year-old man, is reported to have suffered a medical episode just before the impact, which left him in the path of traffic. Despite the swift attendance of emergency services, the elderly man was unable to be saved. Martinez, Inter's second-choice goalkeeper behind Yann Sommer, was left visibly shaken but not physically injured by the tragic collision and has cooperated with local authorities surrounding the circumstances of the incident. The harrowing accident has rocked the club and head coach Cristian Chivu's scheduled midday press conference has been cancelled in a gesture of respect. Police will now begin their investigation into how the incident occurred. Martinez joined Inter last year from fellow Serie A side Genoa. The one-time Spain international had played 12 times for the Nerazzurri, including two league appearances this season. After Sommer's return to the team, Martinez was expected to be named on the bench for Inter's home match against Fiorentina on Wednesday night, but it remains to be seen what the player, club, and authorities decide to do.
