TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government expects the downstream development of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, particularly those using nickel, to be realized within the next two years, said Setia Diarta, Director-General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industry (ILMATE) at the Ministry of Industry.Speaking after the opening of the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in Makassar on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, Setia told Antara that the government continues to accelerate the development of the EV battery ecosystem.The effort is supported by the construction of several manufacturing plants in Karawang by various consortiums, including state-owned enterprises (BUMN).At the exhibition, Setia highlighted the promotion of environmentally friendly and electric vehicles, noting that every booth showcased low-emission models and offered public education on the benefits of adopting green technology.“Visitors can see firsthand how these vehicles contribute to reducing emissions, the progress of the technology used, the types of batteries developed, and even interact directly with the products,” Setia said.Meanwhile, Gaikindo Chair Putu Juli Ardika said the advancement of EV technology is particularly suitable for South Sulawesi, which has a surplus in electricity production.“The technology now allows vehicle owners to charge at home. This is an advantage, especially in South Sulawesi, where there is excess electricity supply,” Putu Juli explained.He added that GIIAS Makassar plays an important role in boosting the national automotive market, with a sales target of 4.1 percent of Indonesia’s total vehicle sales.“Makassar serves as the hub for Eastern Indonesia, with a population of around 1.4 million in the city and approximately 50 million across the eastern region.
