Identifying Steam games that use AI content just got a lot easier thanks to this browser extension

Summary Extension shows Steam AI disclaimers up front by blurring the page and displaying a pop-up. The source code is on GitHub, so you can review or install it if you worry about new extensions. Works only in browsers and relies on developer disclosures, so undeclared AI use won't be flagged. AI has had a huge impact on the world of technology, and video games were not spared. Developers, both triple-A and independent, began experimenting with what AI could do to make their jobs easier. Coding with AI was a given, but what about generating textures and assets? How about using AI to deliver voice lines, especially if the dialogue is procedurally generated? In fact, why not put AI in the game as an NPC and let it react to the player? While developers experiment, consumers have their own views on how AI should be used in video games. To help people make their own decisions, the Steam store asks developers to disclose what AI-generated content they used while making the game. However, this information isn't front and center, and you need to dig through the game info to find the disclaimer. Now, someone has made a browser extension that will immediately notify you if the store page has a disclaimer, which should make things a lot easier. The "AI warning for Steam" extension will show you the AI disclaimer front and center As spotted by GamingOnLinux, a new extension has arrived on Firefox and Chrome. It's called "AI warning for Steam," and it was released only a few days ago. Usually, I'm a little hesitant to recommend an extension that's not even a week old, because it might contain nasty code that steals data or harms your PC. Fortunately, the developer also uploaded the source code to GitHub, so if you're concerned about installing a new extension, you can review the code and install it from GitHub instead. In terms of features, this extension is simple but effective. When you arrive on a Steam game's page in your browser, the extension will quickly check to see if it has an AI disclaimer on the page. If it spots one, it will blur the store page and show a pop-up displaying the disclosure. You can then close the dialog box and decide whether you want to check out the game some more or not. Unfortunately, because this is a browser extension, you can't see the pop-up while looking at games through Steam itself. Also, because this is based on an honor system in which developers report their AI usage, it has no way of knowing whether a developer used AI tools and chose not to report it. However, that's not what it's for; this extension is simply to make the disclaimer a lot easier to find so you can make your decisions ASAP, and for that, it does a great job.
