The Delhi Police’s West District has launched a pioneering, technology-driven initiative called “Netra–Netrutva–Naari” (Vision–Leadership–Women), marking a significant step in both modern policing and female empowerment within the force. This project, which is the first of its kind in India, involves training and deploying women constables to operate advanced surveillance drones in highly congested market areas during the critical festive season. These newly trained personnel, affectionately nicknamed “Drone Didis“, are now a key component of real-time security operations across busy commercial hubs such as Tilak Nagar, Rajouri Garden, Moti Nagar, and Kirti Nagar. Their primary role is to leverage drone technology for comprehensive aerial surveillance, providing an invaluable bird’s-eye view that ground teams cannot achieve. Specifically, they are tasked with monitoring large crowd movements, detecting suspicious activities, managing traffic congestion from above, and identifying any untoward incidents instantly. The core strength of the initiative lies in its efficiency: the footage captured by the high-tech drones is relayed instantaneously to the district control room. This real-time data flow enables a rapid, coordinated response by field units, effectively reducing reaction time to potential security or law and order breaches. According to senior police officials, this move enhances overall policing efficiency by utilising modern technology while simultaneously reflecting the growing role of women in technology-driven security and leadership positions. By placing women at the helm of sophisticated surveillance systems, observers say the Delhi Police is not only bolstering security in crowded public spaces but also setting a precedent for gender inclusion in operational policing across the country.
