A man from Hyderabad shared his frustrating experience with rising cab fares in the city. His post on Reddit caught attention after he revealed how multiple cab drivers quoted shockingly high prices when he tried to book a ride to the airport early in the morning. The user explained that he had a 7 AM flight today, October 28, and booked a cab around 4 AM to reach the airport. But things didn’t go as expected. ‘The Driver Asked For Rs 5,000’ In his Reddit post, the user wrote, “Anyone else facing crazy cab prices to Hyderabad airport early in the morning? I had a flight at 7 AM today. I booked a cab at 4:00 in the morning. The cab driver called and asked where I was headed. I told him, ‘Airport.’ He sounded surprised and then said, ‘Give some extra accordingly.’” The user told the driver that he would not pay anything beyond the app fare. But the driver said that some routes had been changed and there could be delays or roadblocks. Using that as a reason, the driver demanded Rs 5,000 for the ride. It didn’t stop there. The man mentioned that even other cab drivers quoted extremely high fares, which were anywhere between Rs 2,000 and Rs 6,000. The man eventually decided to call his friend for help. “I didn’t understand what was going on, so I asked my friend to drop me off instead. There was some traffic on the way, but he dropped me off quickly,” he added. He ended his post by asking fellow Redditors: “Is there any issue going on with cabs to the airport, or are these drivers just trying to extort extra money from customers because they know people won’t find another cab immediately?” Anyone else facing crazy cab prices to Hyderabad airport early in the morning? byu/Resident_Beat_9246 inhyderabad What Are People Saying Online The post drew in several comments from people who shared similar experiences or offered advice. One user commented, “It’s a scam. I have encountered this discussion multiple times. Don’t waste your time arguing with them. Cancel and proceed to book another ride.” Another added, “This is a pure scam. There won’t be any traffic in the morning. Try Uber, usually they are more professional compared to Rapido and Ola.” Some users suggested alternate solutions. “For me, I’ve always booked through a travel agency. They charge a decent ₹1,500 but I don’t have to break my sweat in the last minute. They come at any given time and same from the airport to my place in Sainikpuri,” a person shared. Someone else wrote about facing a similar issue in the past: “I faced the same issues a few years back. Luckily, I tried for a cab very early. These cab drivers will delay and waste our time, and if we are out of time, we will pay what they ask. I simply rejected and booked an auto to the Airport bus and left for the airport.” ‘Here’s What I Do’ A user shared a detailed approach on how they manage such situations. “I’ve been facing this recently, here’s what I do,” they began. They suggested starting to look for a cab 3–4 hours before the flight and refusing to pay any fare higher than what the app shows. “Whenever a driver quotes you a fare that is more than what the app displays, deny and tell them to cancel the ride. Do not pay extra, eventually you’ll find a driver that doesn’t call you and takes you to the airport at a fair price.” The commenter also advised checking for cabs for about 30 minutes to an hour and if nothing works, going to the nearest Pushpak bus stand. “If it’s super urgent, and you have to take a cab no matter what, then accept a price that is around Rs 500 more than the app’s price, most drivers would agree to that,” they added. Sharing their own experience, the user further mentioned that the situation has been “very bad” and they always take the above approach.
