It comes after prominent New Zealand-born NRL presenter Tiffany Salmond exposed several deeply disturbing deepfakes being made of her, as she continues to call out the issue online. Salmond first spoke out about the disturbing AI attacks when she revealed she had been targeted in May, with a bikini snap being doctored. Since then, more and more images and videos have been made of her performing explicit acts. And the 27-year-old says the issue extends far beyond just her, with so many people targeted in the same way. “This technology is easily accessible to anyone. And while my story has made headlines, this is happening every day, to high school girls, to women at work, to people you’ll never hear about. And just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not (happening),” Salmond wrote on social media on Wednesday. Tiffany Salmond shares disturbing deepfakes. “Shame and secrecy are what make this behaviour powerful. That’s why I made the decision to show what they did. “Because humiliation only thrives when we’re too embarrassed to speak. And they’re the only ones who should be embarrassed.” The rise in deepfake images has led New Zealand parliament to bring forward a bill that gives the government greater power to not only remove the images and videos but also prosecute those who create and distribute them. Kiwi MP Laura McClure’s bill to criminalise sexually explicit “deepfake” images will be brought in front of parliament next year. If passed, the ‘Deepfake Digital Harm and Exploitation Bill’ will amend existing laws to expand the definition of an “intimate visual recording”. MP Laura McClure has also been a victim of an edited deepfake AI nude image. Image: Instagram It will also broaden the definition of a “recording” to include any images or videos that are created, synthesised, or altered to depict a person’s likeness in intimate contexts without their consent. “Since I lodged my bill, I’ve heard from victims who’ve had their lives derailed by deepfake abuse,” McClure, who has been a victim of an edited deepfake AI nude photo herself, said. “Netsafe says they receive complaints daily from people whose images have been weaponised to create sexually explicit deepfake abuse. Principals have told me it’s a rising problem at New Zealand’s schools. Source: News.com.au “My bill does not seek to ban a whole subset of technology or create a new regulatory regime. It is a simple tweak to existing laws to address a specific, well-defined and understood problem. “The technology is advancing, and its use is expanding. We need to act now before the abuse of this technology is normalised.” It is a bill that has the full support of Salmond. “Laura McClure is the MP behind the bill to criminalise explicit deepfakes in New Zealand. It was drawn from the ballot last week and will be formally put to Parliament for consideration next year. This bill has my full support,” Salmond wrote on her Instagram story on Wednesday. Tiffany Salmond also exposed this deepfake where the image on the right is again created by AI. Tiffany Salmond threw her support behind the bill. Image: Instagram Salmond has been targeted on several occassions. Australia is also working to similarly criminalise deepfakes. In September, the NSW Government passed legislation strengthening protections against image-based abuse by outlawing the creation and sharing of sexually explicit deepfakes. The new laws include the production and distribution of intimate images without consent, which now covers those created entirely using artificial intelligence. The amendments to the Crimes Act 1900 make the production of a sexually explicit deepfake of a real, identifiable person an offence punishable by up to three years’ jail. While sharing or threatening to share such images, irrespective of whether the person created them, is also a crime punishable by up to three years’ jail. The Australian federal government has also vowed to strengthen its online safety laws to restrict access to deepfake tools. Communications Minister Anika Wells said last month that the Albanese government “will use every lever at their disposal to restrict access to nudification and undetectable online stalking apps and keep Australians safer from the serious harms they cause”. The government did not specify a time frame for when the new restrictions would take effect. Join the conversation (1 Comment) Add your comment to this story To join the conversation, please log in.
