How Oregonians can donate food and more to help those at risk of losing SNAP benefits

With hundreds of thousands of Oregonians potentially set to lose their SNAP food benefits amid the ongoing federal government shutdown, many businesses and organizations are stepping up to offer meals and other assistance. A number of restaurants will be giving out free food, while other businesses and nonprofits are holding donation drives. Here’s a look at some of the organizations accepting donations to help those at risk of losing benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Don’t Shoot Portland is accepting donations of food, water, clothing, personal care items and more from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at its annex at 927 N.W. Everett St. in Portland. Montavilla Brew Works is hosting a benefit for SNAP and local food banks from 3-9 p.m. Thursday at its Southeast Portland taproom at 7805 S.E. Stark St. Those who bring two or more non-perishable food items will receive $1 off their first pint. TikToker Soup the Anarchist is organizing a protest potluck for 1 p.m. Saturday at Ventura Park (460 S.E. 113th Ave.) in Southeast Portland. A flyer says attendees are encouraged to bring food to share, along with KN95 masks, utensils and containers, music, friends, art supplies and banner-making materials. The Alano Club and the Recovery Gym are accepting food items for their pantries, as well as financial donations. Food donations can be made at the Alano Club (909 N.W. 24th Ave.), or at either Recovery Gym location, at 931 S.E. Sixth Ave. in Portland and 1060 S.W. Baseline St. in Hillsboro. Milk Crate Kitchen, which makes nutrient-dense meals using food rescue, is accepting donations via its website. A donation of $8 per month can provide a meal for a family of four, MCK says.
