Hollywood icon dies at 84 after entering hospice amid ‘significant health crisis’

Sally Kirkland has died shortly after she entered hospice amid an ongoing battle with dementia and other health issues. She was 84. Kirkland took her last breath at 1:50 a.m. PST, her representative Michael Greene told TMZ. Greene also confirmed the actress’ death to Deadline and Variety. Kirkland’s death comes after the legendary actress entered hospice in Palm Springs, California following a string significant medical incidents over the past year. An update on a GoFundMe page for Kirkland also confirmed that the Oscar-nominee was in hospice. “Thank you for all your love and support. Sally is grateful for your kindness and love,” the message from Friday, Nov. 7 read. “Sally is on hospice now and is resting comfortably. Please hold and send the light for Sally.” Kirkland had been “facing a significant health crisis” after SAG-AFTRA canceled supplemental insurance in 2021 for members over the age of 65, according to the GoFundMe that was created on Nov. 18, 2024. The longtime actress broke four bones in her neck and right wrist as well as developed two separate life-threatening infections while recovering. “The combination of these injuries and infections have required extensive hospitalizations and rehab beyond the 100 days insurance will cover,“ the GoFundMe stated. ”As the days pass, lack of proper care greatly diminishes Sally’s chance of a full recovery. However, with the right medical support, we know she has a strong chance of overcoming this setback and returning to the work she loves." Born Oct., 31, 1941 in New York City, Kirkland’s career spans six decades and includes appearances in more than 200 films. Kirkland started her career in the 1960s but was best known for the 1987 comedy-drama “Anna.” Her role in the movie earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in addition to a Golden Globe also for Best Actress. Kirkland’s other notable movies include “The Sting,” “Private Benjamin,” “EDtv,” “Bruce Almighty,” “The Haunted,” “Best of The Best,” “Revenge,” “Coffee Date,” “Roseanne,” “JFK,” “A Brave New World,” “80 for Brady” and the 2024 indie hit film “Sallywood.” Meanwhile, Kirkland’s televisions credits include guest starring on “Criminal Minds” and “Resurrection Blvd. She also had recurring roles on “Head Case,” “Felicity” and “the Simple Life.”
