Jennifer Lawrence has defended director David O. Russell’s directing style (Picture: Alberto E. Rodriguez/WireImage) Jennifer Lawrence has shared her take on working with director David O. Russell, offering a very different perspective than Amy Adams, who once said the filmmaker’s behavior on set left her in tears. Speaking on The New York Times’ The Interview podcast, the 35-year-old Oscar winner described Russell’s notoriously intense approach as direct rather than demeaning. ‘I really felt like with David that was his way of communicating in a non–bull***t way,’ Lawrence said. ‘I never felt like he was degrading or yelling at me. If he didn’t like something, he was just like, ‘That was terrible. Looked like s***. Do it better And that was a very helpful conversation.” Lawrence, who was only 23 when American Hustle was filmed in 2013, said she was largely unfazed by Russell’s methods. ‘I’m not sensitive,’ she explained, ‘I don’t know how you can be in this industry. I mean, these young girls are hopefully gonna grow up in a different time.’ Adams has previously said Russell made her cry on set of American Hustle (Picture: Getty Images) She said she was she was ‘devastated on set. I mean, not every day, but most.’ (Picture: Col Pics/Everett/Shutterstock) But when asked again about Adams’ experience, Lawrence softened her stance, acknowledging that her co-star’s dynamic with Russell might have been different. ‘Maybe he was harder on her than he was on me. I don’t know,’ she said. ‘I mean, yes, of course I’m sensitive. I’m really sensitive. I can’t believe I just said that… I’m not sensitive about acting. I’m not competitive about acting.’ Adams, now 51, described her experience with Russell in a 2016 interview with British GQ, saying that she was ‘devastated on set’ during American Hustle. ‘I mean, not every day, but most,’ she said. ‘Jennifer doesn’t take any of it on. She’s Teflon. And I am not Teflon. But I also don’t like to see other people treated badly. It’s not okay with me.’ Adams and Lawrence were costars in American Hustle (Picture: Entertainment/Kobal/Shutterstock) Adams added that the experience forced her to separate her professional and personal life: ‘Life, to me, is more important than movies.’ Despite the controversy surrounding Russell’s conduct – on American Hustle and previous films – Lawrence remains grateful for the professional growth she gained under his direction. ‘David O. Russell really taught me,’ she said. ‘Because of David, it’s never really mattered what the director’s methodology is. I stay loose.’ Lawrence said Russell helped her learn how to stay ‘loose’ on set (Picture: John Lamparski/WireImage) Lawrence and Russell’s collaborations – Silver Linings Playbook (2012), American Hustle (2013), and Joy (2015) – yielded three Oscar nominations for Lawrence, including a Best Actress win for Silver Linings Playbook. Adams also earned nominations for her work with the director on The Fighter (2010) and American Hustle. American Hustle went on to receive 10 Academy Award nominations in 2014, including acting nods for Lawrence, Adams, and Bale. Got a story?
