Springfield has earned national recognition as one of America’s premier retirement destinations, ranking sixth on a recent list of the 50 best places to retire in the United States. The analysis, conducted by Investopedia and Travel + Leisure, praised the Massachusetts city for offering a “big city feel without a big city price tag” while providing an attractive combination of affordability, cultural amenities and healthcare access. Housing remains relatively affordable compared to other Northeast locations. The city boasts rich cultural offerings that can keep retirees engaged and entertained. Downtown Springfield features the Quadrangle, home to several museums including ones dedicated to Dr. Seuss, science and art. The Springfield Public Forum brings nationally recognized speakers to the area, while the MassMutual Center hosts various events. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate that over 10% of Springfield’s land is dedicated to urban parkland, including two accredited golf courses. Healthcare accessibility, a critical consideration for retirees, is another Springfield strength. Hampden County has 22 hospitals and 683 other healthcare facilities, including Baystate Medical Center and Mercy Medical Center in Springfield. The state exempts prescription medications and medical devices from sales tax and offers income-based home healthcare services for residents 60 and older.
