The working conditions of nurses at the mental health unit of Windhoek Central Hospital are marked by high stress, an overwhelming number of patients, and a severe lack of resources. These nurses care for both criminal patients and those with complex mental health conditions, often under extremely challenging circumstances. They face numerous difficulties, including long working hours, burnout, frustration, and inadequate support – all of which affect the quality of patient care. Aggressive and violent behaviour from patients is common in the hospital, and nurses are reportedly three times more likely to experience such incidents while on duty. Their challenges are compounded by poor management, the absence of effective performance management systems, and insufficient funding. Nurses working at the mental health unit say they operate under extreme pressure without danger allowances, and that management’s attitude further worsens the situation. Walking into one of the wards, they say, feels like stepping into hell on earth. – Concerned Health Professionals
