Hawaii’s No. 1 ranking by online lending company NetCredit is understandable, because many flights from Hawaiian airports are inexpensive short-hop flights between the Hawaiian Islands. NetCredit’s study was based on average roundtrip airfares last year from two or more airports in each state. The average fare from five Hawaiian airports was $287.79. Average flight prices at three Hawaiian airports—two on the Big Island and one on Kauai—were in the top 10 cheapest prices at airports nationwide. Fares at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, the state’s busiest and most mainland-oriented airport, averaged $377.62—below the average at airports nationwide. Low fares at Newark airport played a major role in New Jersey being named the No. 2 state with the cheapest airfares, according to a new study. No. 3 Florida had an average fare of $325.25 from its 15 airports. Forty-one of 49 states evaluated in the study had average fares at their airports that were cheaper in 2024 than in 2023. Delaware was omitted in the study, because it does not have a major airport. Of 142 airports in the study, the airport with the cheapest average domestic flights—$129.99—was Orlando Sanford International in Florida. The airport is served by low-cost airlines Allegiant and Sun Country. Wyoming’s Jackson Hole Airport had the dubious distinction of the most expensive average fare—$611.73. Of the 49 states, average fares in Alaska showed the biggest increase—$51.18—from 2023 to 2024. Average fares at Anchorage’s Ted Stevens airport rose $58.11. The state with the biggest decline in domestic flight costs was West Virginia, where average prices fell $74.93 from 2023 to 2024. The airport with the biggest drop in domestic flight costs—$86.06—was Key West International in Florida. Average airfare data used in the study was gathered by NetCredit from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Editorial StandardsReprints & Permissions
