At the heart of Richmond’s revitalization has always been love — people who love this place, love their neighbors, and love what we’re building together. If we keep showing up for one another, we can move Richmond towards a beloved community, where everyone belongs. Richmond and its media have come very far since 1850. But not far enough. The future we want is within reach, but it will take true transformational changes — not just preservation of the past. Change is inevitable but often painful. Thankfully, my time in Virginia has coincided with a new arc. People of all races and backgrounds live, work and learn together. The lessons of 175 years are clear. Accountability builds trust. Education expands opportunity. Courage defines leadership. If we make wise choices, the future of Virginia will not merely commemorate its past; it will honor it by building a commonwealth worthy of the generations yet to come. As the parent of a sixth grader, I constantly worry about what the swift erosion of our multiracial democracy means. I know — many of us know, here in the South — that the only way to challenge injustice is to do so together. In the classroom. At the ballot box. In the streets. Through a free press. And yes, in the courts. As we commemorate our remarkable 175-year journey, we invite you to join the Richmond Times-Dispatch as we reflect on our legacy, celebrate our impact, and look ahead to many more years of serving the greater Richmond community.
