Govt signs $75M loan agreement for upgrades of health facilities

The Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) said yesterday that the government signed a $75 million CIBC-led syndicated loan agreement to modernize key health facilities, which will include upgrades at Princess Margaret Hospital and the completion of the Freeport Health Campus. “This investment is about delivering modern, equitable, world-class healthcare for Bahamians,” Minister of Health and Wellness Dr. Michael Darville said in a statement released by the PHA yesterday. “We are completing major projects in Grand Bahama and modernizing Princess Margaret Hospital, so patients receive the care they deserve close to home.” The PHA said construction in Grand Bahama continues and that renovations at PMH “will begin in the coming months as part of a broader $50+ million national health infrastructure investment supported by the CIBC syndicated financing facility”. The PHA said the upgrades to PMH will include a new central production kitchen, which will replace the aging facility, improving food safety, efficiency, and meal service for patients and staff. The Critical Care Block will also see the installation of “hospital-grade flooring, which will enhance infection control and safety in critical areas including the ICU, NICU, and operating theaters”. “Targeted upgrades will improve care in high-demand units: Children’s Ward – restored capacity and improved child-friendly environment; Eye Unit – increased surgical throughput to reduce wait times; and the Dialysis Unit – expanded treatment capacity to reduce outsourcing and improve patient access,” the PHA said. The Freeport Health Campus includes “an expanded 80,000 square foot primary, outpatient and urgent care center. “Built with hurricane-resistant standards and elevated infrastructure, the facility ensures continuity of care during severe weather and represents a new standard of delivery for Grand Bahama,” the statement said.
