Goldfields Aboriginal Sports Carnival continues tradition of uniting communities

Generations of families and players came together for this month’s annual Goldfields Aboriginal Sports Carnival, a much-loved tradition that has united communities for more than 50 years through sport, culture and connection. Bega Garnbirringu Aboriginal Health Service once again supported the carnival, with staff attending sporting events throughout the week in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The Tackling Indigenous Smoking Team hosted the basketball and volleyball tournaments, while Bega continued its long-time support of the Goldfields Aboriginal football and NAIDOC netball carnivals. Kunkas were crowned 2025 junior champions at the Goldfields NAIDOC netball carnival, which followed up last year’s success. This year, Bega also joined the inaugural Karlkurla Stars junior footy carnival, a new event that exceeded expectations in both attendance and community spirit. Bega community stalls were set up to share free water, fruit, sausage sizzles and merchandise, while the Bega mobile clinic was on site at the senior netball and football carnivals, giving visitors the opportunity to connect with staff and learn more about the health services Bega provides across the Goldfields region. Bega chief executive Clive Holt said the organisation was proud to once again be part of a long-standing community tradition that continued to bring people together through sport and culture. “Events like this play an important role in strengthening community spirit and promoting healthier futures,” Mr Holt said. “Our team enjoyed yarning with families, sharing health messages and supporting a tradition that celebrates pride across the Goldfields.”
